Alexa+ Explained: Features, Price, Availability in India and How It Works

The short answer
Alexa+ is Amazon's new generative-AI version of Alexa. It talks more naturally, remembers context across a conversation, and can carry out multi-step tasks such as ordering groceries or controlling several smart home devices with one request. It launched in India on 16 September 2026 with Hindi and English support, is free for everyone during Early Access, and Amazon says it will remain free for Prime members afterwards, while others will pay ₹2,000 a month.
What is Alexa+?
Alexa+ is the biggest overhaul of Amazon's voice assistant since Alexa first appeared on the Echo speaker. The classic Alexa worked mostly on fixed commands: "Alexa, set a timer for 10 minutes", "Alexa, play Arijit Singh". If you phrased something in an unexpected way or asked a follow-up, it often got confused.
Alexa+ is built on large language models, the same family of technology behind modern AI chatbots. That allows it to:
- Understand everyday, loosely phrased requests.
- Hold a longer conversation and keep track of what you were talking about.
- Break a task into steps and complete it using connected services.
Amazon announced Alexa+ in 2025. According to TechCrunch, it became available to all US users in 2026 and also launched during 2026 in the UK, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Germany with local-language support, before arriving in India.
Is Alexa+ available in India?
Yes. Amazon launched Alexa+ in India on 16 September 2026. All customers in India can use it during an Early Access period. Amazon had been testing Alexa+ in Hindi in India since June 2026, followed by an English beta, before opening it more widely.

How much does Alexa+ cost in India?
During Early Access it costs nothing.
After Early Access, Amazon says:
- Amazon Prime members (the full ₹1,499-a-year or ₹299-a-month Prime plan) get Alexa+ at no extra cost.
- Everyone else – including people on Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition or with no Prime membership – can use Alexa+ through a standalone subscription of ₹2,000 per month, or by moving to an eligible Prime plan, according to Digit's report on the launch.
That pricing makes the decision easy for most households. Twelve months of a standalone Alexa+ subscription would cost ₹24,000, while a full year of Prime costs ₹1,499 and includes delivery, Prime Video and other benefits as well. If you plan to keep using Alexa+ after Early Access, full Prime is by far the cheaper route.
Editor's tip: If you are on Prime Lite or Prime Shopping Edition and like Alexa+, check the upgrade option in your Prime settings on amazon.in before Early Access ends rather than paying the standalone fee.
What can Alexa+ do? Key features explained
Natural, back-and-forth conversation
You no longer need to say "Alexa" before every follow-up in a conversation. You can ask a question, then refine it ("Make that vegetarian", "What about tomorrow?") and Alexa+ keeps the context.
Hindi, English and Hinglish
Alexa+ in India understands Hindi, English and Hinglish, and can switch languages mid-sentence. That matters in a country where many households mix languages naturally. TechCrunch notes that India has more than 600 million Hindi speakers. Classic Alexa launched in India in English in 2017 and added Hindi in 2019.
Multi-step tasks and shopping
Alexa+ can handle tasks that need several steps. Amazon's examples include ordering groceries through Amazon Now, Amazon's quick-commerce service. Digit reports shopping help such as managing lists, tracking deliveries, comparing products, summarising reviews and watching for price drops.
Smart home control
You can control several compatible devices with one request, and create routines by describing them in plain language instead of building them step by step in the app. Digit names Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro among compatible smart home brands.
Music and video
Digit lists Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Prime Video and Netflix among supported entertainment services.
Personalisation
Alexa+ can use voice and visual identification to tailor answers to individual family members, and can remember preferences such as dietary restrictions when suggesting recipes.
Third-party services in India
Amazon has named Indian partners including Swiggy (food delivery), District by Zomato (ticket booking), MakeMyTrip and Tripadvisor (travel), EazyDiner (restaurant reservations) and JioSaavn (music). Digit reported at launch that several of these integrations – including EazyDiner, Swiggy, District, MakeMyTrip, Home Triangle and Tripadvisor – were planned rather than live, so check the Alexa app for what works on your account today.
Which devices support Alexa+?
Alexa+ works on eligible Echo smart speakers and smart displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa mobile app. Not every older Echo is eligible; Amazon's eligibility page at amazon.in/alexaplus is the authoritative check.
Amazon has also introduced new Echo hardware designed for Alexa+, all of which are on sale in India:
| Device | India launch price | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Dot Max | ₹10,999 | Compact smart speaker with built-in smart home hub |
| Echo Studio | ₹23,999 | Premium speaker with Dolby Atmos spatial audio |
| Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) | ₹23,999 | 8.7-inch smart display |
| Echo Show 11 | ₹26,999 | 11-inch Full HD smart display |
Prices are launch list prices; sale prices on Amazon.in are often lower.
How do I get Alexa+ in India?
- Make sure your Alexa app is up to date.
- Visit amazon.in/alexaplus while signed in to check whether your account and devices are eligible.
- If eligible, follow the prompts to enable Alexa+ on your devices.
- If your Echo is not eligible, the Alexa app on your phone may still give you access, or you can consider one of the newer Echo models.
Editor's tip: If you share an Echo with your family, set up voice profiles for each person in the Alexa app. Alexa+ can then personalise answers, reminders and music for whoever is speaking.
Alexa vs Alexa+: what's the difference?
| Classic Alexa | Alexa+ | |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Mostly rule-based intents | Large language models |
| Conversation | One command at a time | Back-and-forth, keeps context |
| Wake word | Needed for each request | Not needed for follow-ups in a conversation |
| Tasks | Single actions | Multi-step tasks across services |
| Languages in India | English, Hindi | English, Hindi, Hinglish with mid-sentence switching |
| Price | Free | Free in Early Access; free with Prime; ₹2,000/month otherwise |
For the technically curious: how does Alexa+ work?
Amazon has not published a full technical architecture for Alexa+, so this section describes the general approach that Amazon has discussed publicly and that LLM-based assistants use, rather than confirmed internal details.
1. Wake word and speech recognition. The Echo listens locally for the wake word. Once triggered, audio is streamed to Amazon's cloud, where automatic speech recognition converts it to text. For Indian users this step has to cope with Hindi, English and code-switched Hinglish in the same sentence.
2. Understanding intent with a language model. Instead of matching the text against a fixed list of commands, Alexa+ passes it, along with relevant context (what was said earlier, who is speaking, which devices are in the home), to a large language model. Amazon has said Alexa+ is powered by foundation models available through Amazon Bedrock, its AWS service for generative AI.
3. Planning and tool use. For a request like "Order ingredients for paneer butter masala for four people", the model has to plan: decide what ingredients are needed, check quantities, search the grocery catalogue, and build a cart. In AI terms, the model calls "tools" – application programming interfaces (APIs) for Amazon Now, smart home devices, calendars or partner services such as Swiggy – and uses the results to decide its next step.
4. Grounding and memory. To avoid making things up, the assistant pulls facts from live sources (your order history, device states, partner data) rather than relying only on what the model learned during training. Remembered preferences, such as a family member's diet, are stored and fed back as context.
5. Speech synthesis. The response is converted back to speech with a more expressive voice than classic Alexa.
This pipeline also explains why Alexa+ needs a cloud connection and why it is priced as a subscription for non-Prime users: running large models for every request costs far more than classic Alexa's lightweight intent matching.
Privacy: what should you know?
Alexa+ processes your voice requests in the cloud, and its personalisation features rely on remembering information about you and your household. You can review and delete voice recordings and manage privacy settings in the Alexa app under Alexa Privacy. If you use the camera-based visual identification on an Echo Show, the device's physical camera shutter and mic-off button remain the simplest ways to stop it seeing or hearing anything.
